Child Advocacy Awards

  • The Children’s Ministries’ Council will sponsor a conference Saturday, Oct. 4, at Grace UMC, 300 E. Gartner Rd., Naperville. Called "Children and Church: A Learning Event for Persons Who Work with Children" the conference is a learning event for all persons who work with children in churches or church-related agencies or settings.

    Keynote address will be given by the Rev. Mary Alice Gran of the General Board of Discipleship in Nashville. She will address “What’s New, What’s Next, What’s to Recycle in Children’s Ministries.” 

    In addition to her address, Gran will lead a workshop for pastors entitled “Relating to Children in the Church.” This is one of 11 workshops to be offered.

    Other workshop leaders include the Rev. Sung Ja Lee Moon, Emma Winslow of the Chicago Board of Education and Dr. Irma Clark

    Each participant will be able to register for two workshops. Lunch will be provided to participants. Cost per participant is $15. A brochure with registration form has been faxed to all churches, and is available through the conference office at (847) 931-0187.

    The conference will begin with on site registration at 8:30 a.m., and conclude by 2:30 p.m. Child care will be available, but must be reserved. 

    Safe Sanctuaries

    The Children’s Ministries Council also announces availability of persons to travel to local churches or groups of churches to do Safe Sanctuaries workshops. Call Jean Bush to schedule someone for your church. The book, Safe Sanctuaries for Youth, written by Joy Melton, the author of Safe Sanctuaries, is available from Cokesbury. 

    Peacemaker's Retreat

    The Peacemaker’s Retreat for children ages 9-12 will be held in 2004, Sept. 17 and 18, at Wesley Woods at Lake Geneva, Wis.

    The Children’s Sabbath can be celebrated on any Sunday in your church, although it is usually celebrated in October. The Children’s Defense Fund has written materials that may be used in conjunction with a Children’s Sabbath, called Providing What God Requires and Children Need. Copies are available through Natarsha Gardner in the Elgin Northern Illinois Conference office at (847) 931-0187, ext. 16.
